Interviews

Noah Slee has poured out his heart and memories with his album 'it takes a village'. With a wide range of influences and stunning soundscapes, Noah explains what it means to have so many souls intertwined in community. A beautiful collection of symphonies.

This album is surrounded with soul, RnB and alternative pop tendencies with already released singles 'RISE (feat. LVJ)', 'HEALING' and most recent track 'GOLDEN (feat Joy Denalane) setting the direction. Noah knows how important his roots are and thrives within his home culture.

Focus track 'CULTURE (feat. Mulay)' opens with a jazzy feel as he sings about the love he has for his culture. An empowering track.

'I love this song, it’s personal for me. It celebrates culture and owning that part of my identity. It’s definitely been a journey for me to get to this point! Happy to share this moment with Mulay. We had some in depth discussions about what this theme means to US and it was empowering and inspiring to break bread and share our stories and now have all of you partake'.

The album evolves around 9 tracks each as principal as the other. 'WALK' opens the album with harmonic vocals and a leisurely beat creating a glorious atmosphere. Rounding out the album is piano lead track 'END', a suitable name to finish on! This final track is delicate and intricate, it feels thought-provoking but with a sense of gratefulness. It pulls every element to glide us out of the village.

20-Year-Old Clara Mann has dropped her latest single 'Thread'. With so many elements to Clara, we get a fresh and youthful sound. Her sound is so delicate and intricate it feels as if she can open up to us and give a place of peace.

Raised in France but now living in Bristol, Clara grew up with appreciation for different kinds of music, leading to her taking influence from local songwriters. 'Thread' comes as a poetic sonic, filled with dainty rhythms and Clara's airy vocals. She tells a tale on what it's like when people's spirit really makes an impact on an individual, not releasing how important they are until they are gone.

“I wrote this the night I got home after spending three months living with my boyfriend in a one room cabin on Dartmoor. The cabin was at the edge of a farm owned by a wonderful woman called Maggie, who was in her 90s- over the three months, she became incredibly important to me. She had immense spirit, an absolutely wicked sense of humour, and was an incredibly powerful presence on the farm. We’d spend hours with her in the kitchen in the evenings, cooking for her and laughing- I loved her so much."

“That night, when I got home, I got a call saying Maggie had gone into hospital, and that she might be dying. I didn’t know what to do, all I could do was try and hold onto her in my heart. I suddenly wrote Thread, and recorded it on my phone. It’s dedicated to her, but it’s about the whole of that autumn, and the grief and magic of that strange time. Maggie survived that night, and lived another year, before leaving us about a month ago. Traces of her light remain, and she touched me and many others deeply- I hope we meet again someday.”

Alongside 'Thread' we also get a music video. A very vintage and physical poem, featuring puppets and clever sets, we propel straight into an old world. A weirdly reminiscence music video, suiting the lyrics continuously.

This year has been full of music for Lizzie Reid, with her releasing previous single 'Bible' and now 'How Do I Show My Love?'. Ahead of her EP releasing later this year, this new song gives us a preview into what to expect from her.

This Glaswegian singer songwriting gives us her vulnerability, the powerful and comforting side to Lizzie. ‘How Do I Show My Love?’ is about not knowing how to express your gratefulness and love. Lizzie describes the feeling of having countless panic attacks and the vicious cycle it can lead you in with your mental health.

“This is another break up song but over time it has taken on new meaning from its original intention. Over the past few years life has been pretty harsh for a lot of people and when I sing this song it makes me feel how hard it has been to stay connected and express my feelings for certain people I care about. I find it hard at the best of times to communicate properly in a way that I would like but that can feel impossible when times are hard and people are forced to be apart.”

Producing the track with Oliver Barton Wood, the pair worked together to create this timeless track. A special side to songwriting is seeing artists being open about their feelings and struggles. Lizzie does just that with every piece of music that comes our way.
