Interviews

Filling airwaves with his every aspect of his talent, 22-year-old Andrew Cushin powers in with his indie rock rhythm. This lad intones a new-found spark, being as ruthless and honest as he pleases in his lyrics, diluting emotions is not something you will find in this EP. If you are expecting a collection of lovey-dovey lullabies, 'You Don't Belong' will vandalise and leave you astounded by Andrew's strong sonic.

Joining forces with names needing no introduction, Noel Gallagher and Andrew Cushin released previous single 'Where's My Family Gone' which hit highs and resulted in Andrew signing to Pete Doherty's label, Strap Originals.

Written by Andrew and produced by Jason Stafford, this EP is ready to stand the test of time.

Already having released two tracks from the EP, 'Catch Me If You Can' and 'You Don't Belong'. Andrew presents more of a grunge rock rant as his distinct vocals abound over the uptempo guitar-led tracks.

'Catch Me If You Can' holds the theme of 'a chase'. Topping the momentous melody with clever lyricism;

"Here comes the girl with bad intentions,

When she banged the drums the people ran,

Singing hallelujah catch me if you can"

Offering catchy Guitar riffs in 'You Don't Belong', Andrew pulls towards an indie rock sound as his recognisable rough-and-ready voice takes the moment. One of the next instalments of the EP is the punk influenced track 'Yeah Yeah Yeah'. Heavily centring complex guitar chords, this rioter anthem is a high.

The focus track 'Runaway', illustrates the shear versatility of Andrew. With a more gentle approach to the melody, an acoustic guitar rings throughout paired with a piano. Setting the atmosphere just right for a resilient individual to pay attention to the lyrics. Touching on a challenging, yet familiar to most, narrative of a lost-in-life soul, Andrew does not shy back to discuss the dehumanization of society. A arduous topic disguised in sweet-tones.

"With Runaway I wanted to challenge myself, I became influenced by the story of Noel Gallagher writing supersonic.. Oasis needed a single and he wrote one in 10 minutes. I purposely left a space free on the EP and said to myself what ever song I write today, that’s what we’re using. The song was Runaway, it’s great!”

- Andrew Cushin

Visually accompanying 'Runaway', we have a music video (below) directed by Andy Willsher which amplifies the songs power. Taking us through Tynemouth Beach near Newcastle, Andrew lets us witness his belief in what he is singing. Using a collection of charming cinematography, we see Andrew immerse himself in the ocean. Suggesting him 'drowning away with the current' or 'a head under water' it references the idea of 'following the crowd', drawing it back to the strong concept behind the song.

Not stopping there, Andrew Cushin has a long list of live performances to put under his belt. Including his own headline tour, several festivals this summer and shows with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Paul Weller and The Sherlocks.

The Luxembourg-raised artist C'est Karma has a coming of age concept - 'Coffee'. Caffeinating us up with other previous punk singles, 'Coffee' juxtaposes the genre and features an emotion packed piano ballad.

Holding on to the theme of leaving home and setting yourself up, the single is perhaps a moment of realisation of closing the childhood chapter.

Speaking on this track, C'est Karma explains;

“Coffee’ is a song about growing up. I moved away from home for the first time this year. It was a strange and at the same time very liberating experience. This process also made me very aware of the fact that I am growing up. I’m leaving my adolescence behind and staring straight into adulthood’s eyes. I wanted to take the simple and subtle changes in my life and turn them into a metaphor for my own adulting. However, all these changes also come with existential fears, and insecurities I never knew I had. The fear of living an adult life, of being caught in an endless circle, the insecurity that the most exciting part of life will soon come to an end. “Coffee” is a very introspective and intimate song, both musically and lyrically.”

Releasing an EP later this year, C'est Karma introduces challenging themes in the form of music - things that need to be spoken on. Themes such as corruption, broken systems, climate change inaction, wealth with no remorse and more. An EP that is coming to provoke action and present Karma's activism.

Alt-pop artist Lou Roy is here with her latest single 'U.D.I.D' ahead of her debut album out this April 29th.

Adding another significant reason to be celebrating 4/20, Lou Roy sheds light to the high side of life. Releasing another ego into her writing sessions, Lou's upcoming album will be one with no stones left unturned.

'U.D.I.D' comes in the form of layers, playing with colourful chords and pulsating with jammy beats. It disguises itself as a live-laugh-love high but dig deeper and you'll hear it has a darker side.

"I had just had a phone call with a person I love that left me heartbroken, and I confessed to myself and my dog that maybe that phone call was the final straw, maybe I do have to really say bye to them. So I got high and put on Hellraiser (for the second time that evening..idk what was going on there) and decided to try on what it would be like to really just give up on them." - Lou Roy

Proving she has what it takes, Lou Roy has already been noted by Jack Saunders’ on BBC Radio 1 Future Artists. Whilst also supporting globally known MUNA on five dates of their US tour after receiving a personal invite from the band.

'Pure Chaos' is Lou Roy's debut album releasing later this month, co-produced by Sarah Tudzin. This album gives us a clue in the name, a colourful collection of personality, mixed with humour and pure style.
