Susie Merry Makes Her Debut With New Single - 'Weatherman'

On her debut release, ‘Weatherman’, London based singer-songwriter Susie Merry sings softly “You better listen up because my body’s speaking for me now”.

Merry’s new song has roots in her personal life experiences, with gentle guitar laid beneath sweetly sung lyrics relating to her shock diagnosis of endometriosis some years previous.

Merry’s debut EP, set to release later this year, is titled ‘Body In Mind’, and reflects her journey after a diagnosis that caused such a change in her perspective that she quit her job immediately and turned to the song writing she had previously kept to herself.

On ‘Weatherman’, Susie describes the epiphany that changed her attitude towards her own music, leading her to start sharing her songs with others. Becoming suddenly aware of the fragility of life, and the pace at which it changes, Merry’s confidence in herself and her musical talent blossomed, and from a daunting and shocking event sprouted a newfound determination and tenacity for music.

Speaking about the new single, Susie said: “Weatherman is about one day being smacked in the face with the realisation that you have ended up somewhere completely different from where you first intended (and not in a fun, interesting way). That we can do the same thing over and over, and be so habitual without being intentional, that we don’t really feel recognisable to ourselves anymore.”

Perfect for fans of Laura Marling, Adrianne Lenker or Lana Del Rey, Merry’s use of strings enhances her naturally melodic voice to create a sophisticated and established sound, made only better by the authenticity in her lyrics.

‘Body In Mind’ will be released on September 8th, and Merry’s choice for the cover artwork

reinforces the sense that this release comes from somewhere extremely personal, and honest.

Choosing a charcoal sketch depicting a woman’s body laid bare, the artwork conveys perfectly Merry’s message, the fundamental need and appreciation for her body, and everything that comes with it.

Speaking on the artwork, Merry said: “Without the diagnosis, I don’t think I’d have done this.

It gave me a renewed and nuanced perspective on what it means to be a woman, and what I

need for a good life.”

‘Weatherman’ is the perfect introduction to Merry’s EP, offering an intimate insight into her

world, and into the life changes that shape her every day. Merry has taken her own experiences and transformed them into stunning vocals with melody and emotion to match. Reflecting on the overall messages running through the music, Susie said:

“You might not be able to control everything that happens to you, or your body, or your relationships - the list is endless. But you can embrace being patient, and you can be graceful in the face of adversity, and you will come out the other side a wiser version of yourself. That’s why the EP is named as such - this is my body, and this is what is happening at this time, and it is what it is.”
